Burnside
Marvel. Until now, Ambrose Burnside has been remembered mostly for his distinctive side-whiskers and as an incompetent leader who threw away thousands of lives in the bloody battle of Fredericksburg. This biography focuses on the Civil War years and reveals a more capable Burnside. Although his performance included an occasional lapse, this book argues that he deserved far better treatment than he has received from his peers and, subsequently, from historians. 552 pgs., 6"x 9", hdbd.
Fredericksburg

This book details the epic struggle that engulfed the Union side as it crossed the Rappahannock on December 11, encountering stiff opposition from Lee's men. 96 pgs., 70 B&W and 23 color illustrations, 7¼"x 9¾", sfbd.

Private Osborne
Massachusetts 23rd Volunteers: Burnside Expedition, Roanoke Island, Second Front Against Richmond. Osborne. One of the thousands who joined up to fight in the bloody Civil War, Fred Osborne was only 16 when he left home. Discovered 130 years after they were written, this remarkable collection of his letters not only describes life in the Massachusetts 23rd Volunteers, but also details the Burnside Expedition on Roanoke Island and the Second Front against Richmond. 292 pgs., 6"x 9", sfbd.
The Burnside Bridge
Glascione. This is the bridge where, during the Battle of Antietam, Union troops under General Burnside took heavy casualties before crossing the river and advancing into the town of Sharpsburg. Framed photograph measures 11"x 14" with matte.
The Civil War on Roanoke Island North Carolina
Pullen. General Ambrose Burnside continued his expedition into Roanoke Island in 1862, causing great upheaval and dissonance to the simple lives of the islanders. The pictures and rich historical text in this book tell the absolutely fascinating story of the Outer Banks in the Civil War, while journal entries and personal correspondence of soldiers and the drawings of James Wells Champney, who was stationed at Fort Macon, provide a truly personal look into the soldiers' lives. 144 pgs., 172 photos, 12"x 9", hdbd.
The Fredericksburg Campaign
Drama on the Rappahannock.
Stackpole. Detailing the Union's struggle to cross the Rappahannock and seize control of Fredericksburg, this book discusses the various aspects of the battle, the failures of the Union command - led by the newly appointed commander of the Army of the Potomac, General Burnside - and the campaign itself. "Certainly it is the best and most complete account of the entire campaign…" - Army magazine. 336 pages, 5½"x 8", softcover.
Burnside's Bridge
Antietam. Cannan. The stone bridge on the southern flank of the Antietam battlefield became one of the Civil War's most powerful symbols of courage and sacrifice. Union general Ambrose Burnside might have outflanked Robert E. Lee's army if his charge across the bridge had been successful. The actions, units and personalities of this crucial sector of the battlefield are described here in detail, accompanied by a full description of the bridge area as it was in 1862 and as it is today. 156 pgs., 5½"x 8½", sfbd.
