1st Battle of Manassas or "1st Bull Run"  July 21, 1861. The Battle of Manassas was the first major American Civil War land battle between the North and the South. The Federal Army retreated resulting in a Confederate victory. Casualties were estimated at 4,700. Thomas J. Jackson took on the name "Stonewall" in 1st Bull Run.
