Civil War in North Carolina
Barrett. Led by some of the most famous generals of the Civil War, 11 battles and 73 skirmishes were fought in North Carolina. This book presents the complete story of military engagements across the state including the classical pitched battle of Bentonville, the siege of Fort Fisher, the amphibious campaigns on the coast, and cavalry sweeps such as Stoneman's raid. 495 pages, 6"x 9", softcover.

Battle of Despair
Bentonville and the North Carolina Campaign. Broadwater. This book chronicling the often overshadowed series of battles between Union General William T. Sherman and Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston that ultimately led to the defeat of the western Confederate Army relies heavily upon firsthand accounts, with much of the action related through the words of participants. 304 pages, 6"x 9", hardcover.

Battle of Monroe's Crossroads
Wittenberg. One of the most important but least known engagements of Sherman's Carolinas Campaign was the Battle of Monroe's Crossroads, which was fought on March 10, 1865. This narrative describes how the Confederate cavalry's surprise attack on General Kilpatrick's troops stopped the Union advance and bought another day for General Hardee to evacuate Fayettville and join Johnston for the climactic fight at Bentonville nine days later. 366 pages, 50 photographs and illustrations, 28 maps, 6"x 9", hardcover.

Bentonville
Hughes Jr. Here is a full-length tactical study of this important battle. In careful detail, the author lays out Confederate and Union troop movements, places the engagement within the larger military framework of the last months of the war, and also analyzes the reasons for the initial success and eventual failure of Johnston's offensive. 358 pgs., 23 illustrations and 9 maps, 6"x 9¼", hdbd.

Gentleman and Soldier
A Biography of Wade Hampton III. Longacre. Confederate General Wade Hampton III's remarkable life provides a unique sweeping insight into the entire history of the Civil War in the South. This book details his life as a leading citizen of South Carolina before the war; as the highest-ranking cavalry leader during the War, fighting in a remarkable number of battles from Antietam to Gettysburg to Bentonville; and as South Carolina's Governor and U.S. Senator after the War. 320 pgs., 6½"x 9 ¼", hdbd.

Sherman's March Through the Carolinas
Barrett. This book is based on printed memoirs and documentary records of those who fought - and of the civilians who lived in the path of - Sherman's onslaught. The burning of Columbia, the battle of Bentonville, and Joseph E. Johnston's surrender nine days after Appomattox are at the center of the story, but the book also focuses on other aspects of the campaign such as the undisciplined pillaging of the 'bummers' and its effects on local populations. 335 pgs., 6"x 9¼", sfbd.
