Lieutenant James Longstreet commanded I Corps, Army of Northern Virginia during the Battle of Gettysburg. General Robert E. Lee referred to Longstreet as "My War Horse." James Longstreet, like many other Southern loyalists, resigned his commission in the Federal Army on June 1, 1861 to serve the Confederacy. As a Brigadier General, he first saw action at the First Battle of Manassas and was eventually promoted to the senior Lieutenant General of the Confederate Army.
