Civil War Movies 54th Massachusetts Fort Wagner

In the Movie Glory, the first black regiment of soldiers is raised for the Union army. First they were used for manual labor until finally getting the chance to fight. Stars of the movie were Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Matthew Broderick. Denzel plays a runaway slave turned soldier who fights for himself, not to preserve the Union. Morgan plays an older man who later becomes a non-commissioned officer Sergeant. Broderick plays Robert Gould Shaw the leader of the 54th Massachusetts.

In the final scenes, the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts leads the attack on Confederate held Ft. Wagner. Confederates get the best of the 54th as they are well fortified and any Union advance must pass through a small piece of land surrounded by water.  Once at the fort, the 54th must climb the steep walls to engage the enemy. Cannon fire, muskets, and even grenades are thrown down upon the attacking 54th. The ending of the film appears at first that the 54th will prevail as they appear to have outflanked the confederates. The smoke clears and a cannon and several confederate soldiers come into view. The next scene shows the morning with confederate soldiers burying the bodies of the 54th into a mass grave.
